The Decision Analysis Initiative
2010-2015

The Decision Analysis Initiative (DAI) is the 2010-2015 Extension Programme of the George Boole Foundation in support of innovation and the dissemination of information on the technologies, techniques and benefits of online decision analysis systems for organizations, businesses, governance and society.

Activities of the DAI have an applied practical orientation and the principal decision analysis techniques will be explained with examples of applications and online demonstrations. User advantages will be described and the leading challenges reviewed and most significant recent developments explained.

This website site reports on the activities of the DAI and provides access to activty outputs.

The advance of both decision analysis and online applications continue to rely upon the mathematical foundations of logic uncovered and explained by the Englishman George Boole (1815-1864) and by the recognition by the American Claude Elwood Shannon (1916-2001) of the potential application of Boole's work to the more efficient design of electronic switching circuits.

Boolean logic and logic reduction methods were subsequently applied to the optimization of complex chip design and created the foundation of the modern digital computer and communications revolution of which the Internet and the World Wide Web are impressive spin offs.

Decision analysis

Decision analysis theory and applications has been selected as the priority topic for the extension activities of the George Boole Foundation during 2010 through 2015. This five year initiative is designed to assist all sectors gain access to useful information as a basis for moving towards towards more efficient operations.

Why decisions are important

From the standpoint of decision analysis, a decision is not an intent or an idea but is an irrevocable commitment of resources to implement an action or actions to achieve some objective. Any subsequent change in the decision or attempt to cancel it will result in additional resources having to be spent. The strict relationship between a decisions and the use of resources makes management decisions significant in economic and financial terms; decisions are important.

Why online decision analysis systems?

Rational business decision-making identifies options and likely outcomes as a basis for selecting a preferred solution. Many decisions are particularly complex, involve considerable resources, refer to a unique set of circumstances and are therefore associated with considerable risk. Robust decision analysis systems provide a powerful complement to the inputs of domain experts and corporate meetings by providing more transparency and comprehension of the full range of potential options and risks. The World Wide Web provides a convenient and low cost means of accessing powerful online decision analysis systems to review options and risks combining processing power with security and convenience.

The convenience of online operations is that they can be organised to permit the access of any selected individuals or a work group within a company through appropriate access rights. On the other hand they can operate as a general facility for use by the whole workforce as well as corporate and government constituencies.
