The Decision Analysis Initiative 2010-2015The Decision Analysis Initiative (DAI) is the 2010-2015 extension programme of the George Boole Foundation in support of the diffusion of innovation through practical demonstrations and the dissemination of information on the technologies, techniques and benefits of decision analysis for organizations, businesses, governance and society. The activities of the DAI have a practical orientation and will include online demonstrations of decision analysis systems design, implementation, operation and assessments of benefits. The DAI will review the current and emerging decision analysis challenges and the most significant recent developments will be identified and explained.
This website site reports on the activities of the DAI and provides access to activty outputs.
Claude Elwood Shannon | | George Boole & Claude Shannon
The advance of both decision analysis and online applications continue to rely upon the mathematical foundations of logic uncovered and explained by the Englishman George Boole (1815-1864) and by the recognition by the American Claude Elwood Shannon (1916-2001) of the potential application of Boole's work in the process of securing a more efficient design of electronic switching circuits.
Boolean logic and his logic reduction method were subsequently applied to optimize complex chip design creating the foundation of modern efficient digital computers, program and script logic and the communications revolution of which the Internet and the World Wide Web are impressive spin offs.
Decision analysis
Decision analysis theory and its applications have been selected as the priority action for the extension activities of the George Boole Foundation during 2010 through 2015. This is because it has the broadest potential impact on all economic sectors, governance and society in general. This five year initiative is designed to assist all sectors gain access to useful information and practical demonstrations as a basis for increasing confidence and the rate of take-up of such innovations and thereby help increase the rate of increase in real income levels through the more effective use of resources, leading to an enhanced general wellbeing.
Why decisions are important
From the standpoint of the objective application of decision analysis, a decision is not an intent or an idea but rather an irrevocable commitment of resources to implement an action or actions to achieve some objective. Any subsequent change in the decision, or attempt to cancel it, will result in additional resources having to be spent. The strict relationship between a decisions and the use of resources makes their management through decision analysis significant in economic, financial and social terms; decisions are important.
Why online decision analysis systems?
Rational business decision-making identifies options and their likely outcomes as a basis for selecting a preferred solution. Many decisions are particularly complex, they involve the potential use of considerable resources, but often refer to a unique set of circumstances and are therefore associated with considerable risk. Robust decision analysis systems provide a powerful complement to the inputs of domain experts by providing more transparency and comprehension of the full range of potential options and risks. The World Wide Web provides a very convenient and low cost means for the Decision Analysis Initiative to demonstrate the state-of-the-art in decision analysis systems and to disseminate information on the supportive technologies and techniques. Beyond this specific use of the World Wide Web by the DAI, server-based online systems provide a means of low cost access to powerful online decision analysis systems provided as a service. Online operations can combine processing power with security and convenience. Systems use can be managed to allow access for any selected individuals, or a work group within a company, through appropriate access rights. Online decision analysis systems can also operate as a general facility for use by the whole workforce as well as corporate and government constituencies.
